Shelina Jan Mohamed at SMWA
On October 22nd 2011 Shelina Jan Mohamed, the British Muslim novelist, writer of ‘Love in a Headscarf’ came to give a talk and run a workshop at our Bellenden Centre.
15 women attended, some of whom were not native English speakers but all were brave enough to attend a workshop run in a different language about writing!
Shelina is a very practiced speaker and made everyone feel relaxed at confident, before asking the participants to do various writing exercises.
We were asked to write down our favourite colours and then write a memory linked to the colour we had chosen.
What an amazing range of memories: Some remembered sad events in their lives, others happy moments.
We were all able to construct stories around our lives and felt comfortale and confident enough to speak about very personal times and concerns,
communicating about issues most relevant to ourselves.
We hope to invite her again as this workshop was given great feedback.

Bridging Communities – From Comoros to Paris
The object I have chosen is a book, a French book “A Paris, de la langue à la civilisation “(From the language to the civilisation).
It is a civilisation‘s book which aims to teach French civilisation through grammar to people whose English is not their first language.
This book belongs to my mother who used it in class after she arrived from the Comoros Islands, a French colony at that time, early 1975. It helped her familiarise herself with French society and improve her French.
My mother used that book and helped my siblings and myself with our homework as it is a source of grammar lessons and exercises. I used it in France when I was a tutor and brought it here and am still using it to prepare my lesson.
The Comoros are formed of four islands Ngazidja, Mwali, Ndzwani and Mahore. When a referendum in late 1975, had been held to decide whether the Comorians wanted their independence, Mahore voted to remain French colony.
Before the French arrived in the islands in 19th century Indian, Chinese, Persian and Arabic settled. It explains the various type of person of Comorians people even in the same family.
In the 10th century some Muslim buyids (Persian Muslim) had been expelled and roamed the Indian Ocean and found the Comoros Islands. It is believed that they were the first to bring Islam to the Islands.
Islam is followed today by 99 percent of Comorians.
